 Job Overview

The VP of Development will report to and work in close collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees in forming strategy, executing initiatives, and leading all aspects of fundraising to further The Dragonfly Foundation’s mission.

Fundraising includes all aspects of donor programs including annual giving campaigns, major gift solicitations, grants, donor cultivation, and the Capital Campaign.  

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • As a senior executive of the organization, provide overall leadership to ensure effective communication within the organization and to the community:
    • Support the organization’s mission and principles
    • Ensure establishment of and adherence to policies and procedures
  • Lead the Capital Campaign
  • Organize and execute the End of Year appeal
  • Provide leadership direction and insights to the Leadership Team and assist the Executive Director in managing the organization’s ongoing activities and attending various outside events

Fundraising:

  • Provide and execute a development plan to achieve the financial needs of The Dragonfly Foundation including:
    • Planning and executing fundraising activities to meet the goals of the annual budget, including annual and major gift solicitations
    • Managing the grants program including government, private, and corporate grants
    • Building a recurring revenue base through community engagement including attending events and cultivating and stewarding current donors and prospects
    • Creating an endowment fund and launching a Planned Giving program through planned giving and bequests to achieve the long-term financial requirements of the organization
  • Provide support to the board for the Capital Campaign including identifying prospects, soliciting gifts, and reporting on progress
  • Work with the Executive Director and Director of Finance to develop annual financial plans, including development of the annual budget and monitoring of contributed revenue progress to goal
  • Work with the Executive Director and Board Chair to develop strategy to further engage Board Members in giving and providing contacts and introductions for new potential donors
  • Annual fundraising:
    • Deliver fundraising goals to meet the goals of the annual budget
    • Ensure development, implementation and monitoring of the organization’s annual budget in collaboration with the Director of Finance
    • Engage donors for sponsorship opportunities
    • Cultivate new and existing donors
    • Develop the annual report

Strategic Planning:

  • Together with the Executive Director and Board Chair, ensure and oversee a strategic planning process resulting in the development and implementation of a quality strategic and achievable fundraising plan
  • Develop strategic alliances with community leaders and local officials that drive revenue or reduce costs.
  • Increase visibility of The Dragonfly Foundation’s programs, services and activities and maintain good public relations
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center executives for non-programming activities

RELATIONSHIPS

Internal:  Board, Board Chair, Executive Director, Director of Events, Director of Finance and The Dragonfly Foundation’s staff and volunteers

External: Maintain contact with potential and current donors, including the organization’s external community groups, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and others as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have leadership versatility
  • Able to conceptualize, organize and manage the project-planning processes
  • Able to take responsibility and function under minimal supervision
  • Must be willing to agree with and sign:
    • Non-Compete Agreement
    • Conflict of Interest Statement
    • Anti-Harassment Agreement
    • Confidentiality Agreement
    • Social Media Policy
  • Must be willing to submit to a background check and get a yearly flu shot
  • Must understand the confidential nature of the information and protect the organization’s assets and information, including but not limited to financial, employment, patient/family and operational data, sponsorship/donor information, etc.
  • Able to multi-task, problem-solve, and design programs independently
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to travel
  • Available to work evenings and weekends when necessary

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications or related field preferred
  • Minimum of five years work experience in sales, fund development, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Development/Fundraising/Communications:
  • Proven success in development/communications for a business or non-profit
  • Experience running campaigns and successful fundraising from multiple donor channels
  • Planned Giving experience a plus
  • Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives
  • Relationship Building:
  • Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers and others across different levels of the organization and externally
  • Interacts and responds appropriately to key stakeholders
  • Ability to respond to and manage issues effectively
  • Work directly with project management on the Capital Campaign
  • Software Use:
  • General understanding of Salesforce, Dropbox, Office 365 and spreadsheet software
  • Ability to learn the organization’s technologies
