Executive Director, CTRH
CTRH is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization and help shape the future growth. This is a full-time salaried position reporting to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be responsible for overall operations, management, programs, and fundraising activities of CTRH. The Executive Director will be responsible for overall operations, management, programs, and fundraising activities of CTRH. For over 38 years Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship, located in Greater Cincinnati, has served children and adults with physical and emotional disabilities. Riders of all ages participate in our programs: Adapted Rec riding, Hippotherapy, Equine Facilitated Learning and outreach programs. CTRH is a 501(c)3 organization with an annual budget less than $1million.
The Center is located just outside the I-275 loop and has an indoor arena for year-round operations. Currently, CTRH has 5 core staff members, 4 therapeutic riding instructors, 5 therapists and over 100 volunteers, and 15 therapy horses/ponies.
The successful candidate must be an inspirational and visionary leader with the ability to represent the organization externally and be a compelling advocate for CTRH. An understanding of how to run a small business or nonprofit organization, and how to manage fundraising are both also key. They must have the sense that they genuinely care about people and have core values that drive them. The executive director candidate should approach the work with fierce conviction, humor and joy.
The candidate should also have excellent interpersonal and networking skills, as well as a knowledge of non-profit governance and accounting practices. The candidate must be able to motivate and lead the small CTRH team, build relationships in the community, communicate effectively, and work with minimal supervision. PATH certification and/or equine experience is not required but preferred. This is a management position; responsibilities and oversight include:
- Staff recruitment, management, and development
- Donor cultivation for individual and corporate giving
- Development and management of relationships and interactions with participants, potential and current donors, and the CTRH community
- Oversight of Grant writer
- Budget development and management
- Event planning and coordination
- External communications (website, social media, newsletter, etc.)
- Program and farm management oversight
- Coordination and alignment with the CTRH Board of Directors
- Attendance at Board and Committee meetings

Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship- Executive Director
CTRH is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance lives by providing accredited therapeutic equine experiences in a safe, fun and compassionate environment. Our clients include children and adults with physical, cognitive, social, and psychological needs. CTRH is a Certified Premier Accredited Center through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) and is managed with a strong commitment to excellence.
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of the organization. Leadership skills supported by an enthusiastic vision for continued growth of CTRH, as outlined by the current strategic plan, are required. Working with the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director should adhere to existing policies and procedures and make recommendations for modifications or additions to optimize the functions and programs. The Executive Director will be accountable for overseeing operations and the management of the Office Manager, Facilities Manager, Program Director, Instructors and therapists, Volunteer Coordinator, Grant Writer, Events and other staff, using a team-based leadership and management model. The Executive Director will provide updates on key measures to the Board.
Required Qualifications
- Preferred Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent education and experience
- At least 3 years of experience as a people leader
- Knowledge of financial management and budget oversight
- Excellent communication skills
- A passion for the mission of CTRH and serving people of different ability levels
- Willingness to be the community liaison for the organization, assist in fundraising initiatives and build community relationships
Preferred Qualifications
- PATH CTRI Certification
- At least 3 years previous administrative experience in a non-profit organization
- Computer skills using Microsoft Office and other applications such as Donor Perfect
Job Responsibilities
- Conducts strategic planning in collaboration with the Board and their key staff
- Participates and supports staff, the Board and any contracted Event Planner in all fundraising activities
- Supports the Board in its policy oversight functions and assures policies are followed
- Manages the annual budget in collaboration with the Office Manager, Board Treasurer and Board President
- Oversees financial bookkeeping, records and documentation in collaboration with the Board Treasurer
- Ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations
- Serves as a representative to and builds relationships with outside organizations for individuals/groups, riders/families and our certifying organizations
- Cultivates community relationships as appropriate
- Cultivates Donor relationships as appropriate
- Serve as PATH Intl. Center Administrator which includes maintaining the PATH Intl. standards manual and ensuring the center is compliant with all standards.
- Manages, recruits and retains staff in compliance with CTRH policies
- Ensures a safe culture across all programs
- Assures the premises, physical assets and equine resources are protected and maintained
Program Management
The Executive Director has significant program management responsibilities, both as oversight and as manager of all of CTRH’s programs:
- Assists the Program Manager in research, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of programs and services
- Annually evaluates program management and Management staff, providing feedback for growth, development and improvement opportunities for staff
- Makes sure that programs and services meet the board’s policy guidelines and reflect the board policies
- Supervises the implementation of the organization’s programs and services
- Administers day to day operations of organization
- Plans, supervises and oversees collaborative and contractual relationships with outside agencies, e.g., Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and our contractual employees
