Job Description

Purpose:

The Director provides leadership and vision for a multi-disciplinary team in the Wellness Center which encompasses Counseling and Health Services. The Center is committed to the health and well-being of the student community. In addition to developing outreach activities and programs and ensuring compliance with all appropriate counseling protocols, the Director partners with colleagues from across the University, including Student Affairs, Academics, Human Resources, Campus Police, Mission Integration, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Duties:

  • Directs the development and implementation of departmental goals, policies, and procedures to align with the University's Strategic Plan.
  • Remains up to date on best practices, current research, and developments on local, state, and federal legislation related to university counseling centers.
  • Participates in collegiate professional health and counseling organizations on a regional/national level.
  • Recognizes issues and situations that present in the Wellness area that have risk management implications for the University; responds, reports, and assists in the management of such issues in consultation with the Dean of Students and other University administration as appropriate.
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluation of counseling and health services staff and provides any needed clinical supervision for counseling staff, including interns/practicum students.
  • Develops metrics for reporting on Wellness Center staffing and services related to national data.
  • Oversees virtual counseling tools available.
  • Develop processes that prioritize access for all students.
  • Creates and oversees the annual budget for Wellness Center.
  • Leverages grant funding and other opportunities to optimize services and staffing.
  • Directs frequent staff meetings and supports the professional development of department staff.
  • Participates in Student Affairs Directors meetings.
  • Provides mental health counseling to students in order to enhance their emotional well-being and academic success.
  • Oversees and participates in all counseling functions including, but not limited to, crisis intervention, psycho-educational programming, clinical assessment, and case conferencing.
  • Responds to mental health crises within the student population.
  • Participates in mental health on-call rotations.
  • Provides consultation to administration, faculty, and staff.
  • Co-Chair of Wellness, Health and Safety Committee, a University-wide Committee guiding policy and programming for alcohol and other drug use, sexual violence and campus safety, bystander intervention, and general wellness initiatives. This includes overseeing the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program Biennial Review and implementing mandatory online courses related to Alcohol and Other Drug and Sexual Assault Prevention programming.
  • Implement up-to-date strategies for promoting holistic physical and mental health.
  • Leverage resources to maintain best practices for structure and programming for university wellness centers.
  • Contributes to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the division; helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed.

Primary Contacts:

Wellness Center Staff, Students, Dean of Students, Residence Life, Athletics, Campus Police, Human Resources, Faculty, and Staff

Supervision Exercised:

Clinical Supervision for Mental Health Counselors if needed; Administrative supervision for Nurse Manager, Counseling staff, and office assistants.

Supervision Received:

Works under general direction toward broadly defined objectives; refer specific problems to the Dean of Students when clarification or interpretation of University policies is involved.

Qualifications

Education:

Minimum: Masters Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or related field.

Preferred: Doctorate in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work or related field

Experience:

3-7 years of related mental health counseling experience, preferably in a higher education counseling center; Administrative experience in Higher Education. Experience in supporting first-generation students, student-athletes, and non-traditional student populations. A demonstrated ability and commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion.

Specialized Training:

Appropriate licensure with supervisory status.

  • Maintain a high level of accuracy, consistently reviewing work to detect errors, oversights, or omissions

  • Must possess an aptitude for technological development and its implications for appropriate automation of office

 

Work Environment, Physical Demands:

  • Standing or sitting in one position for long periods; computer data input; multiple concurrent tasks with constant service interruptions; high-level customer contact; strict confidentiality; detailed work, stressful client contacts, 24-hour call; attention to and action taken for client and University at-risk situations
