Director of Development and Marketing
The primary purpose of this position is to implement strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and closing gifts and to broaden and stabilize the funding base, while communicating the organization’s mission, goals, and strategic direction. The individual in this position speaks in front of groups and gatherings of various sizes for the purpose of educating the donor and community on the projects.
The Director of Development is responsible for identifying new donors and cultivating and developing relationships with current and prospective individual major donors, in order to build donor support for the organization’s mission and to build the group’s impact on the community. This individual will manage the donor database, and drive forth the efforts to secure gifts, primarily from individuals and family foundations. The Director of Development will develop and implement strategies for identifying new and major gift prospects, cultivating donors and prospects, and maximizing gifts. In addition, this individual will identify and develop strategies for candidates for the Board of Directors and other leadership opportunities. The Director of Development will assist with grant writing and special events, including conception, planning and implementing strategic donor cultivation events and assisting with fundraising and logistics for the multiple benefits and other events as needed. The candidate must show the commitment to the organization’s inspired values and principles as well as a commitment to the vision and mission of the organization.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Development
- Identify funding opportunities in the community.
- Meet face-to-face with prospective donors/philanthropists to identify opportunities for charitable giving that meet the donor’s needs and are consistent with the organization’s goals
- Work with Board members to generate potential leads.
- Ensure active pipeline of major donors by recognizing and engaging donors through strategy development, coordination with staff, strategic collaboration with volunteers and oversight of prospect research and management.
- Identify prospects from daily/weekly gift reports; using criteria to mine the database to uncover prospects; reviewing donor lists from peer organizations; and using other strategies and database resources to identify new potential major donors.
- Develops and manages the gifts annual operational and revenue plans in conjunction with the organization's annual budget.
- Work with the Board of Directors to enlist the participation of fundraisers and volunteer leadership in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major donor prospects.
- Develop short- and long-term strategies for prospects, including annual giving goals and goals for discrete campaigns.
- Develop strategy memoranda and meeting scripts to prepare staff/ED/Board of Directors to make successful asks, demonstrating understanding of donor interests and philanthropic habits.
- Manage stewardship of an organization's major donor portfolio, ensuring that donors experience high-quality interactions that foster long-term engagement and investment.
- Develop methods to convey the impact of gifts and ensure that donors are kept up to date on key developments in organization’s fast-changing campaigns and priorities. Set and meet goals for a number of touch points annually.
- Enlist the support of high-level donors and volunteers to host events and provide new prospect names. Execute logistics, develop strategic event programming in consultation with senior development staff, and strategize and coordinate post-event follow-up.
- Assign and assist with prospect research sufficient to confirm major donor capacity.
- Maintain donor records in the donor database: enter contact reports in donor records and ensure that next steps are scheduled for all active and prospective donors. Enter gift capacity ratings for donors and prospects based on prospect research and use these ratings to prioritize prospects and assign portfolios to the Board of Directors.
- Maintain accurate contact information for donors and run reports based on gift capacity, giving history, outstanding contacts, and other criteria as needed.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with community organizations, as well as with volunteers and donors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Marketing and Communication
- Help develop marketing campaigns for various programs and events, as well as membership
- Coordinate and execute email campaigns
- Help develop marketing collateral for programs and membership
- Design graphics for print or web as needed
- Help keep association organization’s website up-to-date
- Write blog posts, social media posts, and articles
- Coordinate and execute social media campaigns and ensure alignment with overall marketing campaign and mission of the organization
Special Events
- Organize annual event and donor engagement events
- Assists with planning, implementation, and production of all fundraising events including vendor relationships, budgets, and event logistics.
- Develop materials related to events including external communications, printed event materials (including but not limited to signage, programs, nametags, etc.) and event scripts.
- Maintains spreadsheets of all special event timelines
- Works closely with committee and volunteers with preparation, set-up, event execution and tear-down.
- Assists in performing regular administrative duties in a timely and efficient manner; including but not limited to recording and tracking donor contracts and payments, reviewing and submitting event related invoices for payment, writing acknowledgement and thank you letters, assembling donor solicitation packets, creating and updating donor/program related forms, researching both monetary and in-kind funding sources, writing solicitation letters, executing mass mailings.
- Carries out any additional assignments required
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree; CFRE preferred
- 5 years or more of non-profit development experience required.
- Proven track record of securing gifts
- Proficient with CRMs
- Highly skilled in communication – both written and verbal
- Highly skilled with people and data: negotiating, persuading, communicating, analyzing, evaluating, reporting and synthesizing data

Salary Range: $55,000/year - $65,000/year
