Job Summary

The Conservation Education Manager supports the mission of WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium through program design, marketing, implementation, budgetary responsibilities, hiring, training, and evaluation of programs. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Conservation Education Manager leads and manages full-time, part-time, AmeriCorps members, and volunteer educators. Additionally, they oversee the following mission-critical areas: WAVE on Wheels outreach, LCI, Camps, other grant funded programming, and support annual events. Core traits for a successful candidate to this position are highly organized, a great listener, a systems-thinker, innately positive, self-motivated, and has a strong desire to make a difference for our aquatic world!

Job Description

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide leadership in the Conservation Education department as a mentor and contributor with an optimistic attitude about future growth for yourself, team members, and the organization Be inclusive to all team members by showing interest and care for their thoughts, feelings, and ideas Give freely of your time and talents for the betterment of the team and facilitate the same from your team members by recognizing their contributions Recognize your own mistakes and accept feedback sincerely as well as offer feedback and understanding when others are in need Enjoy working in a fast-paced, goal-driven, purpose filled organization Maintain and train staff to uphold the educational philosophy of WAVE Foundation across all program offerings; Experience Wonder. Gain Knowledge. Inspire Action. Maintain an awareness of industry guidelines pertaining to educational programs and ambassador animal programming as set forth by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums; attend professional conferences to enhance knowledge of aquarium activities Implement strategies to accomplish yearly budgets and strategic objectives Provide interdepartmental coordination in planning, leading, scheduling and assisting with conservation and education related programs Collect program data and make available for, and assist with grant writing and reporting Research, design, test, implement, and evaluate all educational programs Ensure all educational programs align with various state and national education standards Review and approve all educational materials prepared for public use. Oversee the development of collateral materials; teachers guides, educational brochures, curriculum materials, promotional materials, etc. Coordinate and supervise the use of educational facilities and resources: work with the Newport Aquarium Animal Care team to ensure the proper training, transport, and care of ambassador animals Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling and evaluation of both paid and volunteer educator staff Make recommendations to Executive Director on long range plans and program improvements for the Education Department Assist the Executive Director with special projects as needed.
