Job Summary

Center for Respite Care is seeking an experienced nonprofit professional to grow the mission and perform active fundraising in alignment with current financial goals. The chief advancement officer will report directly to the chief executive officer and interface with the development committee, grant writer, and executive committee of the board. Using their cultivation and “make the ask” skills, they will grow the donor base, secure larger gifts, connect with the business community, and serve as the liaison for five local hospitals that provides funds.

Job Description

Chief Advancement Officer

Status: 32-40 hours per week/Exempt with FT Benefits

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

OVERVIEW

Center for Respite Care is seeking an experienced nonprofit professional to grow the mission and perform active fundraising in alignment with current financial goals. The chief advancement officer will report directly to the chief executive officer and interface with the development committee, grant writer, and executive committee of the board. Using their cultivation and “make the ask” skills, they will grow the donor base, secure larger gifts, connect with the business community, and serve as the liaison for five local hospitals that provides funds. This represents roughly 40% of the annual operating budget.

ABOUT CENTER FOR RESPITE CARE (the Center)

Center for Respite Care is a 501[c][3] nonprofit organization established in 2003. The Center is a 24-hour facility providing medical and nursing care to sick people experiencing homelessness to promote effective healing. Clients receive quality medical care and assistance in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Since opening in 2003, the Center has cared for over 1,800 sick and injured people who are homeless. www.centerforrespitecare.org.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Corporate Development & Major/Individual Giving

  • Increase annual revenue consistent with strategic goals through fundraising
  • Identify, cultivate, steward, track, and request funds from donors and prospective donors; meet donors in the community where they live and do business…meet donors where they are
  • Learn and utilize nonprofit fundraising best practices to ensure donor intent, ethical fundraising, and raise needed funds for mission-based programs and services
  • Analyze donor information in DonorPerfect for major gift solicitation and eventual gift-close
  • Using information from prior Transformation Award events, analyze the business support and develop a plan to approach them for unrestricted funds

Hospital Liaison

  • Working with the CEO, manage five hospital relationships for continued funding
  • Meet with hospital representatives annually

 Appeals & Support of the Grantmaking Program

  • Manage two appeals per year (May & November); determine the compelling story, craft the appeal, and organize the dissemination both digitally and print, if warranted
  • Support the current grant writer

 Planned Giving

  • Launch a planned giving program (materials already created)
  • Secure letters of intent

 Other Philanthropic Activities

  • Strengthen the faith-based efforts for gifts
  • Serve as a speaker for external events
  • Serve as liaison to external PR/Communication consultant
  • Goal-setting with the CEO
  • Any other initiatives that support fundraising and community initiatives

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE

  • Embodies the values of Center for Respite Care and prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of their role
  • Demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising
  • Knowledge of DonorPerfect a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with seven years’ experience in the nonprofit sector in a fundraising role or similar position; will consider a mix of nonprofit fundraising and private sector sales experience
  • Ability to make “cold calls” when securing new donors; get out in the community to raise funds
  • Understanding of the concept and delivery of a “moves management” method of cultivation
  • Proven experience with initiating, growing, and cultivating individual donors and relationships with businesses

 

Salary & Benefits

  • $75,000 - $80,000 per year based on a 32-hour work week. There may be times when more hours are required, but based on the position, the CEO feels the work can be done in 32 hours
  • Duties can be performed in the office (private office for the chief advancement officer) or remotely – the CAO will determine their schedule and what days/hours of the week they will work
  • Full benefits: health, vision, dental for employee

Timeline & Talent Recruitment Application Process for 2025

March: Recruitment of potential chief advancement officer candidates.

March & April: Phase I: Interview with Anne Maxfield, consultant, who is conducting the search. This will be held via Zoom or phone call.

April: Phase II: Interview with the chief executive officer and key stakeholder (a date for the actual Phase II interview has not been set yet). This will be held in person.

May: Phase III: Interview with chief executive officer, key staff, and select board members. If during the process the CEO determines that a third interview is not warranted, the process will end at Phase II and the offer will be made, along with reference and background checks.

Note: The recruitment process, position description, dates, and processes may be adjusted as needed.
